How To: Choose The Best Method of Hair Removal For You - nz

Sep 09. 2022 by Shaver Shop Team

It’s getting warmer, which means that it’s shorts and singlets weather. It’s that time of year when we realise that we haven’t shaved our legs for months and what is usually a five-minute job has now become a whole event. So instead of the annual shower of dread, let’s look at what the best method of hair removal is for you and make things quick and easy not just for Spring, but all year round.

To break it down, there are three main types of body hair removal. Shaving, epilating, and long-term hair removal. All three have their benefits, so let’s jump into what will suit you.

Method One: Shaving

Shaving is quick, easy, and generally the most popular method. It’s painless and easy to do. There are two types of shavers to choose from, electric shavers or manual razors. Overall, electric shavers will usually end up being more cost effective in the long run, and if you’re accident prone you are less likely to finish with any nicks. Your usual routine can help choose which one is best for you.

If you usually shave in the shower or are prone to irritation, a wet and dry shaver is best. The Philips SatinShave Lady Shaver range has some perfect options for this. The Philips SatinShave Prestige model is a great pick as it also includes a trimmer attachment, which is great for the bikini, or if you have hairs that are a bit longer it can be used before shaving so that it will be easier to shave in less strokes.

Method Two: Epilating

Epilating is a great option if you want to get a bit more time in between sessions. As epilating uses tweezers to remove hair from the root, the treatment times will be far less frequent than shaving. It is also more cost-efficient than waxing, and the best part is that you don’t need to wait for the hair to grow out like you do with waxing.

Epilators are designed to pick up hair as short as 0.5mm, with some even able to pick up hair as small as a grain of sand. The Braun Silk-epil Flex 9 is a great option for this. The Silk-epil Flex 9 has a flexible head, to reach difficult areas such as the back of the knees, and includes trimmer and shaver attachments, so really, you’re getting the best of both worlds. Another upside of epilating for many people is over time the hair starts to grow back thinner due to being removed directly from the root.

Method Three: IPL Hair Removal**

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is the method of using light frequency to stop hair from growing back. Basically, each flash of light from the machine travels through the hair to the follicle to stop the cells from producing new growth. For most machines, you’re usually looking at 12 weekly or fortnightly treatments, eventually cutting these back to monthly, bi-monthly, and then 6-month top up treatments.

The method is simple, shave beforehand, flash the area you wish to treat, and get excited for a hair-free summer. The best time to start these treatments is in spring, as IPL can make your skin more sensitive to light, so it is best not to start treatments in summer. For ease of use, we recommend the Braun Silk-Expert Pro 5 IPL. The Silk-Expert Pro 5’s SensoAdapt™ automatically reads your skin tone and adjusts its power as necessary. It also includes a precision head for hard-to-reach or sensitive areas.
