There are manual toothbrushes, electric toothbrushes and then there’s the Oral-B’s iO. Our teeth have never been cleaner with technology advancing across the oral care market. However, after meeting the Oral-B iO, you’ll quickly realise this electric toothbrush takes the cake when it comes to cutting-edge features.

Opening the box you’ll instantly be blown away by its sleek appearance and LED display. Being greeted by your toothbrush with its good morning display, it feels like a similar experience to using your smartphone. The colour display communicates your desired mode setting, charging progress and a visual two minute timer to ensure you are brushing for as long as you should each time. Plus, its smart pressure sensor which sits further above the handle displays a red light when you’re brushing too hard and green light when it’s just right. It’s easy to love the way it looks, so much so you’ll happily show it off on your bathroom bench especially with its magnetic charger. Even with all of these incredible features, you’ll get over two weeks battery life from just a three hour charge. Not to mention it boasts a 5 minute quick charge in case you forget!

When looking at the head of the brush, it’s similar to Oral-B’s existing range in that it’s a round oscillating head, but take note it has more bristles that micro-vibrate for a superior clean and the angle in which it moves is different. Depending on your mode, the angle of the brush will perform differently. For example, the intense mode will brush at a higher angle compared to its sensitive mode. Regardless of which mode you use, it has been designed to cover more surface area in order to target hard to reach places and give you a thorough dentist-feel clean.

Another great feature of the brush is the app. It syncs via Bluetooth to your phone and provides an extensive analysis on your cleaning habits. If you haven’t used this before, it’s safe to say your first time can be surprising as you may not realise how inefficiently you’re using your toothbrush. From the app you can get various insights like your average brushing score and tips to achieve better brushing habits to name a few. What is most helpful is the real-time position detection so you can brush and watch your app at the same time to make sure you’re not missing any areas.

The Oral-B iO is currently available in two models – Series 9 being the most premium option and the Series 8 coming in a strong second. From a physical perspective, they look almost identical, but there are some differences besides colour. Firstly, the Series 8 has one less brushing mode with six available not including the tongue clean mode. Secondly, it doesn’t feature the 3D teeth tracking which is an incredible feature that maps the surface of each tooth to ensure a complete clean. You’ll still be able to use the app to track your brushing performance but it won’t be an extensive look compared Series 9’s AI capabilities. Lastly, the Series 8’s travel case cannot charge the device like the Series 9 travel case conveniently does. These are the main differences which may or may not be a deal breaker. It will come down to personal preference and what you aim to achieve for your oral health.
